Why Mid-Market Exchange Rates Matter

Understanding the difference between the rates you see online and the rates you actually get.

Every exchange rate you see on this website is a mid-market rate — the midpoint between the global bid (buy) and ask (sell) prices at the time the European Central Bank publishes its daily reference data. This is the rate used by banks and financial institutions to trade among themselves, and it represents the true underlying value of one currency relative to another at that moment.

When you exchange money at a bank, ATM, airport kiosk, or online transfer service, the rate you receive is almost never the mid-market rate. These institutions add a markup — called a "spread" — to cover their costs and make a profit. The spread can range from 0.5% on large interbank transfers to 5% or more on small cash exchanges at airports. Some services hide the spread entirely by offering a "0% commission" rate that is actually several percent away from the mid-market rate.

This is why having access to the true mid-market rate is valuable: it gives you a benchmark to evaluate any offer. If a service quotes you 1.0800 for EUR/USD and the mid-market rate is 1.0850, you know the spread is approximately 0.5%. Armed with that information, you can decide whether the convenience justifies the cost, or whether to shop around for a better deal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about currency conversion and using Lexxyapp.

Where do your exchange rates come from?

Our rates are sourced from the European Central Bank (ECB) via the Frankfurter API. The ECB publishes daily reference rates once per working day around 16:00 CET. These are mid-market rates — the midpoint between buy and sell prices in the interbank market — and are widely used as a benchmark by financial institutions worldwide.

Why is my bank's rate different from what I see on Lexxyapp?

Banks and money transfer services add a markup (called a "spread") to the mid-market rate to cover their costs and profit margin. This spread typically ranges from 0.5% to 5% depending on the provider and transaction size. Our rates show the true market benchmark so you can evaluate how fair your bank's offer really is.

Do I need to create an account?

No. All Lexxyapp tools are completely free and require no registration. You can use the converter, browse currency symbols, generate widgets, and explore currency pairs without providing any personal information.

Can I embed a currency converter on my own website?

Yes! Our Widget Generator lets you create a customizable embeddable currency converter. You can choose from multiple layouts, sizes, themes (light/dark), and accent colors. Once configured, simply copy the HTML code and paste it into your website. The widget can display static rate snapshots or update live.

Are these rates suitable for making financial decisions?

Our rates are for informational and educational purposes only. They should not be used as the basis for trading decisions, contractual agreements, or any financial transactions. Always verify rates with your bank or financial institution before making any currency exchange.
